Blackberry Blossoms Amid the Tangle

Blackberry Blossoms Amid the Tangle

Underbrush. Filth. Useless vines, briars, and invaders of yards. Right?
Every blossom in the pictures is a blackberry blossom. Every one is a potential berry. Vanilla ice cream topping, pie filling, preserve or jam ingredient.
Other plants in the photos are sumac, honeysuckle, pokeberry, and probably a few others.  No one planted anything.  No one tends anything.  In fact, someone comes along occasionally and bushhogs a wide swath to keep the undergrowth out of the grass.  No, I don’t want all of these in my yard either.  Everything is growing wild just like the blackberries.  Without the blossoms, it would be easy to dismiss all the plants as unwanted, undesirable.  Too many people try to eradicate every bit of wildness from their yards… and their lives.  Doing so mows down a lot of potential wondrous things.  Life isn’t perfect.  The blackberries have thorns, really effective and painful ones.  But the only way to eat a blackberry pie is for someone to brave the thorns.
