I went to mom’s house and visited family yesterday. Two different cousins also arrived at my mom’s house with spouses and small sons, so it was a semi-planned family mini-reunion. It was great to catch up with everyone. Three year old Gryphon and I raced (I went slowly and let him win about half the time.) I tried to teach people the card game Eleminis, but it’s meant for seven and older. Gryphon liked matching and playing with the cards, though, and carefully didn’t bend them.
Outside again and standing around talking, I started picking up sticks. Mom has a bunch of great, huge shade trees, but she has some trouble keeping up with all the little sticks and branches. Gryphon wanted to help, so we made a game of it. He announced he was building a fire, and we made a nice little stack. I thought we were playing pretend since no actual flames were involved. I suggested we roast marshmallows, and found some of last year’s brown leaves to put on the ends of sticks. This idea was so well received, though, that he put a dirty, brown leaf in his mouth. Huh. Maybe we were NOT not playing pretend, or maybe it seemed like a good idea at the time. No harm done, which is more than I can say for some of my own things that seemed like a good idea at the time.
